INEOS Manufacturing Scotland Undergraduate sponsorship scheme

What qualifications will the students need to have in order to apply?

Same qualifications required for entry to University -Applicants should have a minimum of four Highers to include Maths and Physics with a minimum of B grade passes. Higher chemistry is required for applicants wishing to study Chemical engineering. A second language is desirable, if not, a willingness to learn one would be required.

What other criteria will you look for in candidates?

Demonstration of the required aptitudes and behavioural competences.

What if I have not yet sat my Highers, can I still apply?

Yes, If you feel confident of achieving the required qualification criteria , mentioned above. If you do not gain the necessary passes at Higher level, you will not be considered for the course

What is the format of the course?

You will study at Forth Valley College and Heriot-Watt University working towards a MEng Degree. At INEOS, Grangemouth you will get the chance to learn from experts, and a real taste of what it is like to work in a Refinery and a Petrochemicals industry.

What is the difference entering this programme than the already established route to a MEng?

We are looking to add practical skills and experience to an academic programme

How long is the programme?

Five years full time equivalent study which includes plant placements

Which university will be supporting the programme?

Heriot-Watt University

What qualification are the sponsored students aiming for?

A Master’s Degree in their relevant engineering discipline.

What is included in selection events?

The application form will include Qualifications and Competence Based Questions. We will screen the application forms, then invite successful candidates in to attend a set of Aptitude tests and a personality questionnaire. The next stage would then be an Assessment centre looking at Group exercise, HR and Technical interviews involving INEOS and Heriot-Watt personnel. Offers will then be made subject to medicals and proof of qualifications

Who will be the employing organisation?

In years 1 and 2 the local college will employ the students and year 3 and beyond they will receive a training contract from INEOS

How much will the sponsorship be worth to the student?

Sponsorship starts at £5850 in year 1, with £8320 in year 2 and approximately £8500 for years 3,4 and 5. INEOS will also meet the full cost of University fees.

Is this scheme similar to the INEOS-sponsored modern apprenticeship scheme?

No. The schemes are completely separate, one aimed at developing technicians for the future, the other is designed to deliver graduate engineers for the future

Who pays the student fees at University?

INEOS will pick up the University Fees

What makes this a better course than going straight to university?

The course provides the same academic outcomes and in addition to gaining a Masters degree you will gain valuable experience and also INEOS will sponsor you through the programme, so you earn while you learn.

The benefits for the student are they receive full sponsorship to a Masters Degree level at the same time as gaining real experience through working in a Petrochemical complex.

The benefits for the Company are that they will receive qualified Engineers who will have a good understanding of INEOS operations and working practices.

Will you guarantee the student a job at the end of the training period?

Students who are successful through the programme and who meet the necessary standards of competence are likely to be offered a permanent position with INEOS assuming that there are opportunities available at the time.

What happens if the student fails to make the grade and doesn’t get required qualification?

From very early on in the programme the students will develop a range of practical skills and will gain a further qualification before commencing their Masters programme. Students who do not complete the programme will have significantly improved their opportunities within the job market.

At the end of the course, does the student have to work for INEOS?

Having sponsored the students to achieve their degree, INEOS would expect that the students in return would be prepared to commit themselves to working for INEOS for a period after the completion of the programme.

Will the student graduate have to work at Grangemouth?

This will generally be the case although their may be opportunities to gain experience at other sites.

Are there any restrictions on who would be eligible to apply?

You have only advertised in Scotland. Does this mean you are only looking to sponsor Scottish students?
