Kevin Brodie, Process Control Engineer, Refinery

I have worked at the Grangemouth site since 1998 and have been in the refinery Process Control team since 2001. My area of responsibility primarily covers the crude distillation units, distillate hydrotreaters and catalytic reformer. The job of process control engineer is varied covering everything from maintenance and development of basic regulatory and traditional advanced controls through to the delivery of major projects using multivariable process control technology such as RMPCT and DMCplus. The advanced controls I maintain and develop have the potential to deliver circa $5m per year to the refinery bottom line. My job requires that I work closely with other engineering disciplines such as the process engineers, production planning, and Instrument/Electrical engineers plus of course the shift teams who operate the units on a day-to-day basis.

Technically I continue to develop through a combination of excellent opportunities to practice my skills and technical training to which management are committed. Recently this made it possible to attend the Aspentech Advanced Control & Optimisation User Group meeting in Barcelona. This was a fantastic opportunity for me to meet and discuss with process control engineers from other manufacturing companies and to learn about the latest technology developments. The Process Control team spans the whole Grangemouth site, one of the largest integrated oils and petrochemical complexes in Europe, providing an almost unrivalled range of process plant on which to work. I really enjoy working at INEOS and continue to find the work challenging and interesting, this is illustrated  by the fact that after eight years I  still learn something new almost every day.
