JOB purpose

Improve laboratory capability

Responsibilities AND Accountabilities

This should include consideration of the requirements relating to 20 Principle responsibilities (particularly for Technical Roles).

  • Source, specify, commission, develop, verify and validate new analytical equipment to achieve targets from the Laboratory Five Year Capex Plan. Implement handover to the routine area and provide ongoing support to ensure successful utilisation of new equipment.
  • Develop, verify and validate new methods to meet the requirements of standard and laboratory developed methods.
  • Evaluate how changes to business objectives impact on laboratory service. Assess the development requirements by liaising with the asset and recommend a cost effective approach to meet the business timescale.
  • Schedule, cost and complete development projects to meet the agreed laboratory operational and legislative requirements and priorities. Develop new or adapt existing methods and procedures to meet agreed requirements and solve problems. Present data and findings for inclusion in Lab Capex plan where appropriate.
  • Develop and recommend long-term strategies for critical measurements by understanding future business and legislative requirements to ensure Laboratory capability to match future business needs with the most appropriate technology.
  • Provide technical support through experience and technical expertise, to the routine function and Team leaders to investigate and solve complex analytical problems to ensure accuracy of analytical results for the assets.
  • Act as technical authority for analytical methods and techniques to ensure compliance with national, international and industry standards. Ensure their safe operation and that the standard and validity of the technique is fit for purpose to ensure that results generated will be of sufficient accuracy and precision to meet site and customer specifications.
  • Recommend and implement improvements in the laboratory to ensure best practice and assure the quality and accuracy of lab results.
  • Provide, review and interpret analytical data and report results to the asset areas in support of process plant development and troubleshooting.
  • Organise and prioritise training to the required standards of Quality and Safety, including INEOS 20 Principles.
  • Deliver high quality training, assess and assure competency of laboratory technicians in new or complex techniques/methods and use of analytical equipment, preparing training material as required to meet the training requirements defined by Team Leaders and the Lab development plan.
  • Prepare and review statutory assessments (COSHH, Risk, Manual Handling) to ensure compliance with site and legislative requirements.
  • Undertake laboratory tasks impartially and without bias that may arise from commercial, financial or other pressures.

  • One Commercial Chemist deputises for the Commercial and Development Relations Team Leader during periods of absence.

qualification, knowledge and skills


  • Degree in chemistry or related subject preferable. HNC and relevant laboratory experience may be considered


  • Aptitude to gain and apply expertise in any relevant analytical technique as and when dictated by customer or laboratory requirements.
  • In depth knowledge of a wide range of analytical techniques used within the Laboratory.
  • Up to date with current and new techniques, standards and legislation.
  • Knowledge of site processes and products and understanding or associated analytical requirements.


  • Good planning and organisation skills, together with the ability to deliver to a deadline.
  • Has a logical and methodical approach to problem solving and the ability to recognise key issues and provide solutions.
  • Has the ability to assimilate and analyse data and information, report recommendations and justification.
