Organisational context and job purpose

INEOS, one of the largest independent global chemical companies is seeking to recruit a highly motivated Lead Study Engineer

As a Lead Study Engineer within INEOS you will define, develop and deliver a study programme in line with O&P UK business demands, recommend proposals to improve business performance and meet regulatory/compliance requirements

Responsibilities AND Accountabilities

  • Lead the study team to ensure delivery of front end solutions in accordance with site standards and project governance.
  • Embed a stage gated, robust study process that aligns with asset requirements and the project lifecycle.
  • Manage the study budget in line with the 5 year plan to ensure asset meets business requirements, HSE requirements and any emerging work.
  • Lead the study team to ensure adequate consultation is taken from other engineering and operations disciplines within and out with O&P UK to ensure a robust option can be presented to the Asset at the end of the study phase.
  • Engage with third party design contractors and technical specialists to provide engineering support and solutions for studies.
  • Engage with the Process Safety to ensure all compliance issues are addressed and develop a plan to implement Process Safety Gap closure.
  • Monitor study costs (including third party), programme and quality and take corrective action as necessary to ensure studies are carried out within agreed timescales and costs.
  • Ensure the study team delivers all required technical and project deliverables to gain sanction for funds.
  • Ensure that an effective basis for each study is defined with the Asset and other key project stakeholders.
  • Define and gain agreement to a study programme and study cost.
  • Establish and sustain effective working relationships with project management community so that all study objectives are met.


  • Ability to manage a team to meet timescales and budgets.
  • Ability to communicate and influence at all levels from managers to more senior level within organisation.
  • Ability to supervise junior engineers in line with their development plan.
  • Ability to manage moderate uncertainty (including fundamental technology options) within scope and capable of resolving ambiguity with asset and business
  • Ability to take ownership of study budget and schedule and deliver against these targets.
  • Has in depth knowledge plant design and plant operations
  • Has a basic appreciation of economic evaluation techniques
  • Ability to manage key interfaces within project (construction, process safety, engineering, asset management, regulatory etc.)
  • Can proactively challenge working practices and engineering standards in an appropriate manner where business and engineering benefits can be achieved.
  • Has good knowledge of top tier COMAH sites
  • Awareness of multi-disciplinary issues which impact on project scope and study definition
  • Good decision making skills within area of expertise
  • Can coach/mentor interns and developing engineers to support professional development of individuals.

qualifications, knowledge and skills

  • Chartered, degree qualified chemical engineer with relevant experience
  • Excellent understanding of the application of the site Plant Modification process and associated documentation management systems
  • Awareness of process safety concepts and issues and can apply at a basic level
  • Team member experience of HAZOPs, investigation enquiries and SIL assessments
